When winter weather hits, it can often seem like one’s best wardrobe pieces are hidden away beneath an endless parade of winter coats and hats. But no matter how basic your winter wardrobe, the use of weather-appropriate accessories can take your outfit from so-so to seriously stylish. These five winter accessories are sure to look fashionable and brighten even the gloomiest winter days. Remember that when it comes to accessories, you can be as bright and colorful as you like, but contrasting colors are always a safe bet if you're not sure where to start.

Leather Gloves

During cold winter days, chic leather gloves not only keep hands warm, but do so in a stylish way. And, with bodies all covered up to protect against falling temperatures, your hands will be especially noticeable, so your choice of gloves can be a very important fashion statement.

Good quality leather gloves are a practical investment and, depending upon the style, they can be trendy, contemporary, or traditional. Either way, most leather gloves go with just about anything, from jeans to suits. If you tend to lose gloves frequently or are generally disorganized, you may want to opt for slightly cheaper wool gloves.

Scarves

Sure, scarves can keep you warm, but they also serve a stylish function. Using different scarves with one coat throughout the season is a super-easy (and relatively affordable) way to keep your look fresh and interesting, making it less noticeable that you are wearing the same coat. You should, however, avoid wearing a scarf in the the same color as your coat. Rather, the color, texture, and style of the scarf should go with the rest of your outfit. When in doubt, remember that you can never go wrong with cashmere.

The color of your scarf sends a message. Whites, grays, blacks, and blues, as well as classic patterns like houndstooth and stripes are especially appropriate for conservative daytime attire, but they’ll also carry you through sophisticated evenings. Louder patterns and colors work best for casual looks. No matter the occasion, you individualize your look by choosing interesting textures. Fringes, knitted patterns, appliques, and embroidery all look good for work and play.

Boots

Boots keep your feet warm in stylish comfort and are an important accessory for any winter wardrobe. And who says winter boots have to be dark? Vanillas, camels, nudes, and reds are all fashionable shades that brighten any winter day. Browns, beiges, and blacks stand the test of time and will work with any other colors.

This season, wedge ankle boots or booties are especially fashion forward, as are thigh-high boots and equestrian styles. Eye-catching details like buckles, studs, zippers, and fringes can elevate a basic boot to something much greater.

As far as materials, you can never go wrong with soft, rich leather, but you should also keep an eye out for materials like nubby tweed, soft suede, and utilitarian canvas.

Hats

With so many unique shapes and styles available, it can be difficult to choose a winter hat. Whatever you do, don’t settle for an unflattering toboggan--unless, that is, you are actually sledding or you find yourself in sub-zero temperatures.

When you wear a hat, keep your hair simple and make the hat the focal point. Select colors that flatter your skin tone. In addition, make sure the hat enhances your outfit, not competes with it.

Belts

Whether worn over dresses or coats, belts make ideal winter accessories. Even if your coat does not have belt loops, you can still use belts. Wide belts work best over most coats. Always wear your belt at the slimmest part of your body. Anyone can wear belts, but darker colors and matte finishes work best for larger frames. Contrary to popular belief, belts don’t have to match your bag or shoes, so feel free to get creative.
