As the weather grows colder and our daylight hours shorten, many people find themselves feeling a bit unmotivated or even depressed. The winter blues can affect anyone, but some people do seem to be more susceptible. If you’re the type who dreads the dreary days of winter, try a few of these tips to avoid the winter blues.
Take In Sunlight and Vitamin D
The sun does more than keep us warm and give us light. It is also our only natural source of vitamin D. A lack of vitamin D can cause a range of health problems and is thought to be a contributing factor in the winter blues. Seek out sunlight during winter days and talk to you doctor about adding a vitamin D supplement to your diet.
Exercise Regularly
Staying active is a great way to fight off the doldrums and enjoy a healthy sense of accomplishment. It might be hard to get moving, but you’ll feel much better about yourself once you do. Exercise also has the added benefit of releasing feel-good chemicals known as endorphins into your body. Plus, if you take a brisk walk at lunchtime, you’ll be getting sunlight and exercise--a one-two punch of fighting off the winter blues.
Change Your Diet
People tend to move less and eat more in the winter, especially during the holidays. Fight off sluggish feelings by making a few simple changes to your diet. Avoid fatty and salty foods while adding in more fruits and vegetables. Be sure to drink plenty of water because winter’s dry air can easily leave you feeling dehydrated.
Change Your Wardrobe
The cold winter months are a great time to break out colorful scarves, sweaters, gloves and jackets. Treat yourself to some fun new winter accessories and make sure you have clothing that will keep you warm enough to get outside for some ice skating or a stroll down snow-lined streets. Plus, an extra punch of color is a nice change from the standard winter black, brown, navy, and white.
Complete Projects
When winter’s harsh weather keeps you indoors, use the time to catch up on projects. Print off some pictures to frame or assemble into an album. Take up a new hobby, learn to play a musical instrument, draw pictures, write a story, or clean out your closets. You will stay active and be proud of what you achieve.
Join a Car Pool
Commuting to work on dark winter mornings can be a depressing start to the day, especially if you spend the drive worrying about the damaging effects of snow and salt on your car. Do something about both problems by joining a car pool. Driving in to work with colleagues may perk you up in the morning, while reducing the number of cars on the snowy or icy roads will help make driving safer for everyone.
Enjoy the Season
Winter may not have the warmth of summer or the vibrant colors of fall, but the season does bring its own small joys. Battle winter blues by embracing the season. Drink hot chocolate, take a drive to see local holiday lights, go sledding, or take a trip to a nearby ski lodge. Find ways to enjoy winter and celebrate its unique charms.
