Q. Is it really dangerous to put gas in my gas tank while my car is running?

A. Yes. Gasoline is highly flammable-- that’s what makes it such a good fuel for your car. Just a tiny spark from your spark plug is enough to ignite it. Little malfunctions in your engine or a stray spark of any kind can set off a flash fire, so always remember to turn off your engine before beginning to pump gas.

Severe damage can be caused if a fire catches at the gas pump. Aerosmith drummer, Joey Kramer, found out first-hand. In 1998 gas leaked under Kramer’s Ferrari as he was pumping gas, and it caught fire. Kramer suffered second degree burns--ouch. The Ferrari was a total loss--double ouch. Don’t let a simple mistake cost you damage to yourself or your vehicle.

It might be tempting in winter to keep the engine running and heater blasting while you’re outside in the cold pumping gas, but it’s not worth the risk. And remember, there are other people at risk too. Play it safe and turn off the engine before you fill up.
